Opening Reception for the Superlative Artistry of Japan Exhibition

On July 29, Consul-General Yoichi Matsumoto attended the opening reception for the Superlative Artistry of Japan exhibition at the Clayton Center for the Arts in Maryville, TN. Consul-General Matsumoto delivered opening remarks focused on the strong connections between Maryville and Japan and expressed his gratitude to all those involved for their cooperation in organizing this traveling exhibition. Dr. Bryan Coker, the President of Maryville College, talked about his institution’s long history with Japan, dating back to an exchange student in the 19th century. The reception included a tour of the exhibit and an introduction to Japanese culture, including a shamisen performance, a tea ceremony, and mochi pounding demonstration.
