Bentenya (Girls Chindon Band) Visits Nashville

The all-female chindonya band group “Bentenya,” originating from Aichi Prefecture, Japan, visited Nashville on August 27 during their tour of the U.S. Midwest and South. They also visited the Consulate-General of Japan in Nashville and performed.
Bentenya was founded in Nagoya in March 2008. Chindonya are entertainers who parade through streets wearing colorful costumes, playing instruments like gongs, drums, and clarinets to promote shops and goods. Their name is said to derive from the “chindon” sound of drums and gongs.
Bentenya is currently touring the U.S. on Route 66, traveling through the Midwest and South. They stopped in Nashville before heading to their next destination, St. Louis, Missouri. While in the Nashville area they also visited Kenrose Elementary School, Vanderbilt University, Belmont University, and Lockeland Elementary School.
