１１月１日（土）アーカンソー州ホット・スプリングス市において、ホット・スプリングス花巻姉妹都市プログラムに対する平成２６年度外務大臣表彰式が開催されました。
外務大臣表彰は、わが国と諸外国との友好親善関係の増進に特に顕著な功績のある個人及び団体について、その功績を称えると共に、その活動に対する一層の理解と指示を国民各層にお願いすることを目的としています。
ホット・スプリングス花巻姉妹都市プログラムは、１９９３年の花巻市との姉妹都市締結以来２５年以上に亘って、高校生や一般市民による相互訪問などを通じて両市の市民間の交流を推進し、友好親善の増進に多大な貢献をされています。
表彰式では、加藤元彦総領事より、両市の関係がますます発展することを祈念する旨の挨拶を行い、表彰状をホット・スプリングス姉妹都市基金カーラ・モートン代表に贈呈しました。モートン代表は、メアリー・ニールソン事務局長のリーダーシップで、両市の若者世代の交流が深まりこのパートナーシップが世界平和に貢献していることを喜ばしく思う旨の挨拶を行いました。また、花巻市から訪問していた高校生などが歌や踊りを披露しました。式典に続いてレセプションが開催され、第二次世界大戦に従軍し負傷した経験を乗り越えて日本との交流を支援した退役軍人の方を含め、大勢の関係者の出席を得て盛大に執り行われました。

The Conferment Ceremony of the Foreign Minister’s Commendation award to the Hot Springs-Hanamaki Sister City Program was held in Hot Springs, AR, on November 1, 2014.
The Foreign Minister’s Commendations are awarded to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in international fields, to acknowledge their contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries and areas. The Commendation also aims to promote the understanding and support of the Japanese public for their activities.
The Hot Springs-Hanamaki Sister City Program has played an instrumental role in promoting friendship between the peoples of the two cities since they formed a sister-city relationship in 1993. The Program has organized numerous exchanges of students and community people.
At the ceremony, Consul-General Motohiko Kato expressed his hope for further enhancement of the relationship and presented the award to Carla Mouton, President of the Hot Springs Sister City Foundation. President Mouton commented that the partnership, under the direction of Executive Director Mary Neilson, helps to bring together the younger geneartions and contributes to world peace. There was a student delegation visiting from Hanamaki, and students both from Hanamaki and Hot Springs performed a dance and sang a song. The ceremony and a recpetion were held with many guests in attendance including Mr. John Baran, a veteran who advocated establishing this partnership over 20 years ago after overcoming his experiences of serving and being wounded in World War II.
