都留ヘンダーソンビル友好委員会に対する外務大臣表彰式（１１月７日）Conferment Ceremony of the Foreign Minister’s Commendation Award to the Tsuru Hendersonville Friendship Committee (November 7, 2014)

１１月７日（金）加藤元彦総領事は総領事公邸において、都留ヘンダーソンビル友好委員会に対する平成２６年度外務大臣表彰式を開催しました。
外務大臣表彰は、わが国と諸外国との友好親善関係の増進に特に顕著な功績のある個人及び団体について、その功績を称えると共に、その活動に対する一層の理解と指示を国民各層にお願いすることを目的としています。
都留ヘンダーソンビル友好委員会は、１９８３年の山梨県都留市との姉妹都市締結以来３０年以上に亘って、公式訪問団の相互派遣のみならず小中高校生や一般市民による相互訪問などを間断なく行うことで、両市の市民間の相互理解促進に多大な貢献をされています。
表彰式では、加藤元彦総領事より、両市の関係がますます発展することを祈念する旨の挨拶を行い、表彰状を都留ヘンダーソンビル友好委員会ベッツィー・ウェデキンド会長に贈呈するとともに、本件表彰式に際しての岸田文雄・外務大臣からのメッセージを代読しました。ウェデキンド会長は、両市の交流が３０年以上に亘って継続したのは関係者からの支援に依るところが大きく、受賞の喜びを友好委員会の幹部やメンバーと共有できて幸せである、都留市側の関係者とも一緒に受賞したと考えている旨の挨拶を行いました。ルイ・オリバー判事（本件姉妹都市交流が締結された際のヘンダーソンビル市政担当者）による乾杯に続いてレセプションが開催され、出席者は懇親を深めました。
本件表彰式に際しては、森屋宏・参議院議員、掘内富久・都留市長、澤田洋一・都留友好委員会会長、菊池敏彦・桂高等学校校長からもお祝いのメッセージをいただきました。

The Consul-General Motohiko Kato held the Conferment Ceremony of the Foreign Minister’s Commendation award to the Tsuru Hendersonville Friendship Committee of Hendersonville at his official residence on November 7, 2014.
The Foreign Minister’s Commendations are awarded to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in international fields, to acknowledge their contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries and areas. The
Commendation also aims to promote the understanding and support of the Japanese public for their activities.
The Tsuru-Hendersonville Friendship Committee has made great contributions to deepening mutual understandings of the peoples of Hendersonville and Tsuru-City, Yamanashi, since the two cities formed a sister-city relationship in 1983. The Committee has continuously helped official delegations and student exchanges between Hendersonville and Tsuru for more than 30 years.
At the ceremony, Consul-General Motohiko Kato expressed his hope for further enhancement of the relationship, presented the award to Betsy Wedekind, President of the Friendship Committee. President Wedekind commented that the partnership between the two cities of more than 30 years was possible thanks to many supporters, and she was very happy to share her joy of receiving the award with those people, including board members and members of the Committee. She also expressed her desire to share the award with friends in Tsuru. Judge Louis Oliver, who was City Manager when the Sister-City relationship was established, proposed a toast. Then, the guests socialized and strengthened relationships to support the Friendship Committee.
On the occasion of the ceremony, we received congratulatory messages from Hon. Hiroshi Moriya, Member of the House of Councilors, Hon. Tomihisa Horiuchi, Mayor of Tsuru, Mr. Yoichi Sawada, President of the Tsuru Hendersonville Friendship Committee of Tsuru, and Mr. Toshihiko Kikuchi, Principal of Katsura High School.
