Transit Visa

A foreign citizen traveling to another country who will have a brief layover in the Japan when the only
reason for entering the Japan is to transit. Not including business, academic or visiting relatives/
acquaintances purposes. It is not permitted to perform activities to undertake revenue generating business
operation or activities to receive remuneration.

【Term of Stay】 Stay of up 2 nights/3days.

【Validity of Visa】 Single entry: 3 month from date of issued. Double entry: 4 month from date of issued.
※ You don’t need a visa if following ALL conditions are met: (1) You have confirmed onward tickets, (2) Your transit is
within same calendar day, (3) Your transit is within same airport (4) You have no intention to enter the Country.
※ If you are non-revenue passenger (aka: stand-by passenger) need a Visa.

Required Documents
  1. Applicant's valid passport, properly signed by the bearer (Please make sure that there is at least 1 page left in your passport for a visa to be affixed to.) If you submit a PERMIT TO REENTER THE UNITED STATES or a REFUGEE TRAVEL DOCUMENT issued by the U.S. government, it must have a validity date at least six months beyond the date of visa application.
     
  2. "VISA APPLICATION FORM TO ENTER JAPAN" (available here), completely filled out and signed by the applicant
     
  3. One recent photograph (2" x 2") attached to the visa application form (no staples or tape over the photo). The photo must be no older than 6 months and color print with photo paper.
     
  4. Proof of sufficient funds to defray all the expenses while in Japan (e.g. applicant's three most recent bank statements for savings and/or checking accounts). If you are not paying for your trip, a letter from the person/entity covering the cost of your trip is necessary.
     
  5. A confirmed reservation record of your round-trip flight to/from Japan. An e-ticket or print-out from a travel agency, airline or travel website is acceptable. The print-out should include:
    -Your name.
    -Your confirmation number/record locator.
    -Your airlines, flights and all departure and destination cities.
    -Your complete round-trip flight itinerary, starting and ending in the US. This should include all of the countries you are visiting other than Japan, if applicable.
    *Please note: We do not require the purchase of tickets, but we do require a confirmed reservation. We are not responsible for tickets which may be unusable due to the delay or denial of a visa.

    For those with non-revenue ticket holders(working for an airline company):
    a) Actual Non-Revenue ticket (original plus copy of all pages), plus a printed entire flight information from the airline company
    b) A copy of the employee ID of the airline employee who obtained the flight coupon, or a letter from the airline proving the employee works for the airline, and that the applicant is authorized to use the non-revenue ticket
     
  6.  Immigration documents showing your legal status and permitting reentry into the U.S., such as copy of permanent residency (green) card or I-94 and valid U.S. visa. (Students on a F-1 visa must present endorsed I-20 form and applicants on J-1 visa need to present endorsed DS-2019 form.) If you do not intend to return to the U.S., visa to next the destination (if required) must be affixed to your passport before you apply for Japanese visa. (Copy of Immigration documents is acceptable.)
    Please note that in principle the Consulate-General of Japan in Nashville does NOT accept an application from B-1 and B-2 U.S. visa/status holders. Those holders need to return to their home country in order to apply for a visa to enter Japan.
     
  7. Release of Liability form  (if your visa application is processed by mail)

     
  8. A self-addressed return envelope with a prepaid overnight air bill (or Express Mail stamp)
     
  9.  Visa Fees
The Consulate General of Japan reserves the right to request additional documents if deemed necessary. 

Processing Time
The time to process an application for a Visa depends on the applicant's circumstances. Please allow at least three business days, to have your application reviewed. No expedited service for visas. There are some cases; however, in which a few weeks or more are needed to process an application.

a) In person:
Please submit all of the requested documents together at the visa window during office hours.
9:00 AM - 12:30PM and 1:30PM - 5:00PM 
Monday - Friday except holidays  

b) By mail:

Documents will not be returned (Except for your passport). Please retain copies of all documents you submit for records.
We will not make copies, if you need original documents, please make a copy.
