Deposition Visa
The following documents are required for attorneys and other relevant personnel (including translators and court reporters) to go to Japan for the purpose of attending a deposition

Required Documents
- Applicant's valid diplomatic/official passport, properly signed by the bearer (Please make sure that there is at least 1 page left in your passport for a visa to be affixed to.)
- "VISA APPLICATION FORM TO ENTER JAPAN" (available here), completely filled out and signed by the applicant.
- One recent photograph (2" x 2") attached to the visa application form (no staples or tape over the photo). The photo must be no older than 6 months and color print with photo paper.
- A letter from the applicant's law firm, stating the brief outlined of the case, name of the applicant and period of stay in Japan. Please also include a statement of guarantee for the applicant's travel expenses.
- A copy of a filed court order or commission issued by U.S. Court and addressed to U.S. Consul stationed in Japan
According to Article 17 (1) (e) of the CONSULAR CONVENTION BETWEEN JAPAN AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, a deposition can only be taken by a U.S. Consul. Therefore, a commission/court order must be addressed to a U.S. Consul. The commission/court order issued by a U.S. court must be sent directly to the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo or the appropriate U.S. Consulate in order to schedule for a deposition to be taken.

- Release of Liability form (if your visa application is processed by mail)
- A self-addressed return envelope with a prepaid overnight air bill (or Express Mail stamp)

The Consulate General of Japan reserves the right to request additional documents if deemed necessary.
Applications by mail
If your visa application is processed through the mail, enclose a self-addressed envelope and sufficient postage stamps for Certified, Priority, Registered or Express Mail for return. If you would like to use FedEx or UPS, enclose a prepaid mailing label or completed air waybill and an envelope for return. Please include a Release of Liability Form. The Consulate-General of Japan is not responsible for your passport in case of its loss, damage, delay when sending through the mailing service for return.
Documents will not be returned (Except for your passport). Please retain copies of all documents you submit for records.
We will not make copies, if you need original documents, please make a copy.
Visa Fees
Visa fees are determined according to reciprocal arrangements between Japan and the country of the applicant's nationality. Click here for Visa Fees.
Processing Time
All applications must be referred to our Home Government for an approval. This may take anywhere from one to four weeks. Please allow sufficient time before your travel date to apply for your visa No expedited service for visas.
